American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Funding Opportunities for Natural Gas Engines
Many vehicles powered by older natural gas engines are reaching engine rebuild/replacement intervals. Repowering is a
"Shovel/Wrench Ready" project that could qualify for funding under "The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)" of 2009.
Under the certified repower section of the ARRA, approved projects can receive up to 75% of the cost of an engine repower, which
includes labor and equipment. The ISL G is the first engine compliant with 2010 EPA and CARB on-highway
NOx and PM standards, which are applicable to urban bus applications.
- Lower Emissions: Replacing a 2000 model year natural gas engine with an ISL G reduces NOx by over 90%.
- Lower Greenhouse Gases: The ISL G is over 5% more fuel efficient than the lean burn natural
gas engine it replaced, and therefore has a lower GHG impact.
- The use of natural gas reduces oil imports.
For further information on the ISL G Upgrade Program, contact a Clean Cities Coordinator in your area or a
Cummins Westport representative.

Highway and Energy Bill
In an effort to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil, reduce urban emissions and greenhouse gases, the US federal and state
governments have implemented incentives to encourage the purchase and use of natural gas vehicles (NGVs).
The Highway and Energy Bill*
( PDF file)
means that customers may be eligible for tax credits on medium duty vehicles with a gross weight between 14,001–26,000 lbs
of US $20,000 per vehicle, or US $32,000 for heavy duty vehicles over 26,000 lbs equipped with the
ISL G engine.**
Some limitations to the credit may apply, depending on the specific circumstances of the customer. Customers should contact the
IRS or a tax advisor to determine if and how the tax credit will apply to their vehicle purchase.
Additional information:
* The Highway and Energy Bill is a general term referring to the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and the two tax credits
resulting from this legislation. See links in this section for more detail.
** As calculated based on the Alternative Fuel Motor Vehicle Credit, part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
Other Incentives
For funding and incentives available in your area, contact your local natural gas vehicle organization or government energy
office.
